My kindergarten classroom is the first English language experience for many of my 12 multicultural students. Most of my students come from families whose first language is not English and most of my students have not been to preschool. They have not had the rich English language experiences that other students have had and yet they are expected to learn to read and write English right from the start. To try to boost their early literacy skills, we read many books aloud in class and I have MP3 players with stories on them in both English and their native languages. In fact, using these MP3 players is a favorite activity in our classroom. Unfortunately, the inexpensive, but easy to use MP3 players that I can afford purchase for our classroom keep breaking. The displays that students use to find the correct book do not work and numbers are unreadable. My students need new school-grade, tough MP3 players that are easy to use. This grant will provide my classroom 3 durable MP3 players with voice recorders so that I can continue to provide stories digitally as well as record new stories in my students' native languages. With your help, we can continue to support these students as they acquire English language skills, build vocabulary, and learn to read fluently. You can help keep the love of books they already have going by providing the technology they need.
