Using Technology To Show Students The World

As technology makes our world seem smaller everyday, communicating with other people and cultures is key to the kind of education all children deserve. I am a Spanish teacher at a charter school serving 5th - 8th grade. For many students this class is their first exposure to other languages and cultures. As a Spanish teacher my goal is to give my students more than just a mastery of the language. I want my students to appreciate the many diverse cultures that speak Spanish. In the language classrooms I have visited in more privileged schools, technology is central to exposing students to different accents, customs and traditions. It's one thing for me to describe what el dìa de los muertos is to my students, it is another thing for them to be able to see the colorful altars and processions. It gives them the sense of what it is like to be a part of something they may never otherwise have had the interest in experiencing. With an LCD projector in my classroom I will be better able engage my students visually. I will be able to better illustrate for them vocabulary and grammar. I will be able to capture their imaginations by showing them language in action, as used by native speakers every day. They will be able to hear a variety of accents and view the Spanish speaking world as more than the stereotypes to which they are already exposed. When students can be invested in cultures that use Spanish, they will have more reason to retain and use what they learn in the classroom. Your help will make it possible for my students to broaden their consciousness beyond their neighborhoods to the possibilities of being a world citizen.
