My students need funding for a field trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in NYC.

I work at a special education school, servicing emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance. The school’s ethnicity is as follows: 60% Hispanic, 30% African American, 8% Caucasian, and 2% Asian. These factors come together and place our children at a huge disadvantage, but we are committed to providing them with a rigorous academic and therapeutic program. I teach history to these special needs students, and would like to provide them with an opportunity to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in NYC. Students will visit the most recognizable structure in the United States, the Statue of Liberty, which was erected to commemorate the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The afternoon will be spent visiting Ellis Island, which is the symbol of American immigration. I intend to invite students who have immigrant parents, or who are actually immigrants themselves, because this experience will have special meaning for them. For a typical school trip, parents would be asked to provide funds for their children. However, most of my students live in poverty, and their families are unable to reach into their own pockets. We strive to provide our students with as many experiences as possible, regardless of their financial situations. I have several students interested in studying history in college, and participating in this experience will help history "come to life" for them.
