This is my 2nd year at this school teaching 5th grade; however, before I became an educator, I was a classical ballet & contemporary dancer and involved in the dance field for over 20 years. My school is a high-need community (over 60% free and reduced lunch students). The dance club would be open to 4th and 5th grade students at my school (up to 25 students). Once I have established the club, I would like to open it up to 3rd grade also.

Last year was my first year at this school, and many students came up to me wanting to start a dance club. My district and Principal are very supportive with the formation of a dance club and I look forward to it taking off. My goal is to inspire students to enjoy the Arts, as well as provide them with the opportunities to express themselves. The students will learn a variety of dance styles (folk, classical, modern, jazz/hip hop), along with choreographing their own pieces.

I would very much like to be able to record the work and progress of the dancers and the works we learn and create. Not only is it important for the students to see themselves while working on technique, it will also allow others to see what we are doing as a after-school club. In this age of being able to download music, students expect to hear music at a high quality. Since I am teaching in the gym, it is important that I have equipment that produces an excellent sound. These three items (camcorder, camera and CD player) will help in attracting support for the program. The club itself will not only allow the students to learn different styles (yes, more than hip hop) of dance, but also build self-esteem, confidence and coordination.

For many of our students, this club will allow them to express themselves in ways they cannot during school. Your donation will ensure that our students not only have the opportunity to learn, create and perform, but also to help the students evaluate and critique their practices and performances.
