Books We WANT to Read!

My students need copies of book titles boys will be interested in such as "Lockdown", "Escape from Furnace", "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian", "Powerless", and "Raven's Gate".

I teach language arts in the wonderful city of St. Louis. My class is full of bright and curious 7th graders that are eager to meet their individual reading goals this year. Unfortunately, we are located in a high need community that does not have the means of equipping our students with adequate supplies in order for us to meet our learning goals. Part of my mission as a Teach For America corps member is to ensure that all students are receiving a quality education, and the students in my classroom deserve the same opportunities as students in more affluent communities. At the beginning of the year my students came into my classroom and moaned and groaned about reading. Although my students are 7th graders, many of their reading levels were more than two years below grade level. It took a lot of innovation and engaging short stories, but now my students LOVE to read. The same students that hated reading at the beginning of the year now come in to class and ask, "Can we read another story today?" I want to continue to foster my student's love of reading, the problem is that most of my class novels contain female main characters that the male students are not interested in reading. In order to continue engaging my male students in reading I need interesting books that my male students will both enjoy and challenge them. The problem, however, is that my school does not have sufficient funds to purchase new books this year. Additionally, since more than 89% of my students qualify for free lunch, it would be impossible for them to purchase their own books. In order to meet the needs of my male students I need a variety of books that I know my students will love! I have selected titles based on their current interests such as The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, Raven's Gate, Lockdown Escape from Furnace, and Powerless. If I had these books available my male students would be able to select books for literature circles that they find interesting and can relate to. With your help we can continue to help my students grow as readers. Additionally, you will help to close the achievement gap for these struggling readers by allowing them to read challenging books that will increase their reading levels. At the beginning of the year my students set the goal of making two years reading growth in only one year. So far they have increased their reading scores by one year. Your donation will give my students the extra push they need to grow that extra year in reading. By closing the achievement gap for these students you will be giving them opportunity to reach their full academic potential. One person truly can make a difference in the lives of these students
