Ms. Garrett Franklin High School
Portland, OR Grades 9-12

I am an English teacher at a high school; my students are freshmen. I am in an urban school district and at least 50% of our students are on free and reduced lunch.

I am always trying to raise the bar for my students. In order to better serve my students, I have been looking for a coming of age text that is current and interesting, yet challenging. Most of our texts are young adult or very classic, like Romeo and Juliet and The Odyssey. While all the works we study are good books, there is something missing.

While taking a literary theory seminar this fall on the literature of the 'war on terror,' I discovered Jonathan Safran Foer's book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The novel is about a young boy who lost his father in 9-11 and his search, literal and figurative, for his dad. The book touches on many important topics and is more literary than typical young adult novels. It has earned acclaim from Publishers Weekly and the School Library Journal.

I have had some success in the past getting the right books to the right students. It is amazing when a person makes that connection, and falls in love, sometimes for the first time with reading and books. I write grants and buy books with my own money, too, to continue to get the books my students need, the ones that will make them get excited about reading and that will challenge them to read more, learn more.
