Without Percussion, We Lack Rhythm!

My students need 6 sets of xylophone mallets and a 2 piece conga set with bongos.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

How can a child feel a real rhythm without the feel of real percussion? Four days a week, our Kindergarten scholars have music class. These children are part of a great start up regional charter, with a combination of four low-income communities, whose funds are limited. Our student population consists of children with diverse backgrounds, from high-need communities.

Having the ability to see the scholars four times a week, scholars' music skills have progressed very quickly, especially with lessons that include rhythm. I know that the scholars can clap and pat the rhythms, but they are ready for more. Currently when it is time for a rhythm lesson or an accompaniment for a song, we work with three drums; two of which were handmade and are broken, and one small drum. Scholars are always the most excited when I tell them that it is time to play the drums, even though they know the only ones we have are inadequate. We also have a celebration at the end of the day every Friday called “Town Hall,” that requires a drum to get scholars pumped up at the beginning of the ceremony. Sure enough, our broken drum does not make the cut! We were lucky enough to purchase six Xylophones at the beginning of the year that came with six sets of mallets. Since they are Kindergartners, two can easily share and play the Xylophone. The only thing preventing them from sharing and doubling the amount of children on the Xylophones is the lack of mallets!

All scholars need more than just body percussion, or two handmade drums that are falling apart. Scholars need the ability to be exposed to real instruments, so they can fully express themselves, and experience the feel of something real! Something as simple as mallets can double up the amount of children playing an instrument at one time. Not only will this help them be even more excited about learning rhythms, but this will help them create more elaborate accompaniments.

It is up to you to help us fill this gap and help our scholars' physical, intellectual and social development with the gift of percussion!
