Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Greetings! I am a first year, 2nd grade teacher in a Title 1 school...that means that my students come from low social-economic households. Despite these challenges, the students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their reading and math skills.

The BEST way to incorporate science and social studies into our school day is through books. However, whole class copies of a text are hard to come by. And if I read one copy of a text, the students are just listening and cannot see the pictures and diagrams well.

An ELMO Presenter will allow the students to see the pictures and diagrams in a science book while being able to read along with the words. Because the ELMO presenter is like a video camera that can project book pages onto a large screen, the whole class can read a text together.

With your help, I can make science and social studies books come to life. Using the ELMO presenter to introduce informational text to the whole class will give my second grade students reading strategies they can use on their own when reading informational text. Reading science and social studies books engages the students and makes them excited about reading. If our class can obtain an ELMO projector, the students can be even more interested in the words of the text we are reading together.
