My second grade class is such a great group of kids! Our school is a high-poverty suburban school, with a very diverse population. We have all races and many, many cultures. And my class is working hard to learn how to work and play together.

I truly believe that teachers have an opportunity to teach more than reading/writing and arithmetic. We can foster good character in our students, and that in turn will help these young children to become good citizens some day. My students work very hard every day, and as all children do, they look forward to recess. However, our Title I school has little money to spare on playground equipment when we have so many educational supply needs.

Help me to build character in these children. Just today, even though the temperature was so cold, a boy asked for a football. I had to tell him that we had none. Although he said nothing, he walked away with his head hanging low. I want to bring a smile to his face and those of my other students by having a wide selection of playground supplies, so that they can have a break from the hard work that they are doing all day.

I'm not asking for much - a few balls, jumpropes and a ball pump. But these few things will earn you incredible appreciation from my students. Thank you in advance for caring for our children.
