Quad Players Need Four Heads

My marching band students need drum heads and harnesses for their quad tom drums.

I teach for a high school in the heart of a very large city in Washington. Most of our students face enormous challenges coming to school. We have many foster children, and our poverty rate is around eighty five percent. This school has a tradition of having a Drum Line and students are very proud to be a part of it. The Drum Line gives students something positive to be a part of and a reason to come to school.

If we want our students to succeed in learning, we need to give them the tools to be successful. Currently, we are very lucky to have two beautiful sets of Quad drums. Unfortunately, their heads are so worn that it is nearly impossible to keep them in tune, and they don't have harnesses. So, as the rest of the drum line marches, our poor quad players stand in place.

With a new set of heads and a new harness, we can make it so that this old set of drums sounds like new. The students who will play them will really enjoy their sound and they will add interest and sparkle to our drum line.

Many of our students come to school for the music program. Drum Line teaches leadership, discipline, honor, and citizenship. Often. our scholars come from the drums, and then stay for math. As they proceed through high school, scholars may realize that they are in a position to go to college. After that, if we have done our job, I hope they change the world. When you and I give them the tools and education to be successful, we send a message that we believe in our scholars and that they should believe too. We never know which seeds that we plant in our young people's minds will flourish, but with your help, our music can plant seeds of hope to crowed out any seed of despair.
