Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 4th and 5th grade special education students in a high poverty area of south Louisiana. Approximately 98% of the students are on free lunch. Our teachers are very dedicated to our students and the students are enthusiastic learners.

"Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" is a novel with many lessons to learn. My students enjoyed reading it tremendously, so much so that they are begging to read the sequel, "Let the Circle Be Unbroken." Their interest in this book is so great that I needed to find a way for the class to get copies. The students want to be able to read the book themselves rather than me reading it aloud to them.

I am requesting 30 copies of "Let the Circle Be Unbroken." The students enjoy taking turns reading aloud to one another. Their curiosity to find out what happens next is so great, that I want to be able to give them their request. The students are learning so much about the history of this country and what it was like to be African American in the 1930's. They have learned that this is not just American History, but their history. I want to be able to teach them more about our history through exceptional literature.

Your help will encourage my students to continue their interest in powerful literature and to be able to connect it to historical events. The lesson this book will teach them will empower them to be better students and active participants in society.
