Italian Immersion Vegetable Garden

I hope to empower my students by engaging them in an urban gardening project and teaching them how to grow nutritious produce on their own.

My students live in an urban environment and the majority of them qualify for free or reduced lunch. Most of my students' diets consist of processed, food-like products with very little nutritional value. For the past five years I have been involved with urban gardening projects within my community. I have seen first hand how children are fascinated by gardening projects regardless of their prior knowledge with planting or produce production. The goal of this project is to revive our school's garden by creating a school-wide vegetable garden initiative. My goal is to inspire unity and create mentoring opportunities at our K-8 school by the creation of a vegetable garden. We hope to encourage healthy eating habits and grow produce that our students will cultivate, harvest and consume.

The resources requested for this project will help our students get a head start on vegetable production. We have requested gardening tools, an indoor plant light, soil, pots and two Earthbox planters to get our project started. Our goal is to have classrooms growing plants indoors this spring to get a jump on the short Wisconsin growing season. Many volunteers and organizations have stepped forward to provide us with seeds, seedlings and muscle. Your donation will help provide our school with some of the basic materials to get our project started. Our students are certain to benefit from the outdoor hands-on learning that the vegetable garden will provide. In addition, our hope is that students will take ownership of this project and become avid urban gardeners.

By donating to our project, you will help our school establish a environmental and nutritional learning center that has the momentum, leadership and potential to last for many, many years.
