I teach kindergarten in a diverse, high-need public school in California. For many of my students, this is their first exposure to books, and they are just beginning to develop a love for literature.

My students love to read along to books on tape/CD, however my Listening Center is in desperate need of repair and expansion.

We need a CD/tape player, story books, CDs, and headphones to work in small groups listening to stories, following along in our own books, and later writing responses to the stories we read. Each day in our classroom, we do Literacy Corners, in which students work independently in small groups, while I am teaching small guided reading and writing groups on the carpet. One Corner that students love, is the Listening Corner. Here, in a small group, students listen to a story while following along in their own book. After they have heard the story, they respond to it, first by discussing it with their group members, and then by writing and drawing their favorite part of the story.

This donation will help my students expand their love of literature and grow as readers and writers. It will inspire a lifelong love of reading and writing, which will start in kindergarten.
