My students need stage lighting so that they can be seen during school plays.

Our school serves students in a small town which has been ravaged by floods in the past two consecutive years. Several families are still homeless as a result of the devastating loss of their homes. We have 350 (4th to 6th grade)students attending our school. Since our poverty level is above 90%, students are rarely given experiences to appreciate the Arts outside of school

We have spent the last 8 years growing a drama program which benefits all of the students at our elementary school. Each year, we are asked to find funding to pay for the expenses of the production. One obstacle we faced in our production of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" this year was the inability to light students effectively when they were on and off stage. Our school gymnasium lights take 5-10 minutes to come back on if you turn them off. They make a loud buzzing sound, drowning out the voices of the 4th-6th grade actors and actresses.

By providing stage and audience lighting for the plays, we will not have to have scenes where students are standing in the dark with buzzing in the background, trying to be heard. In our production of "The Wizard of Oz" next fall, we will be having characters traverse through the audience on their way to the Land of Oz. We have had flashlights shining in the actors' eyes in the past, but better lighting will bring a new dimension to the productions.

Since our program serves the entire student body, and depends on community and teacher volunteers to function, we need to make the hard work come to life. Scenes with students standing in the dark takes away from not only the quality of the show, but also deprives the students of their right to shine (vs. being blinded by flashlights). Fostering student success in drama translates to higher student self esteem and achievement in all curricular subjects. Our school is the "rainbow" for our students and our drama program is their road to success.
