The Mean Green Reading Machine

My students need 17 books on gardening and going green like "The Lorax" and "Easy to be Green", 14 books on reducing, reusing, and recycling to preserve the planet like "The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle", 8 books on soil, composting, and worms like "Diary of a Worm", and 5 books on climate change like "A Hot Planet Needs Cool Kids."

I teach all subjects (language arts, math, science, social studies, art, and health) to 22 5th grade students. I teach in a diverse, public, neighborhood elementary school that serves a high-need community of kindergarten to fifth graders. Of our approximately 400 students, 14% are Limited English Proficient and 68% qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school also has a high percentage of children with autism. Our school is part of the Oregon Green Schools movement. We are committed to recycle, reduce our waste, save energy, and conserve water. 4th and 5th grade students are active stewards of our school's vegetable and native plants garden. Students also run a compost station in the school cafeteria and are active in a Green Club that works to conduct waste audits and educate the student body about green issues.

My students are passionate about green issues and often ask for book recommendations to help them learn more about the issues facing our planet. 4th and 5th grade students are paired with kindergarten and first grade buddies and the older students often ask for books to share with their younger buddies to help them understand why we compost in the cafeteria or help them learn more about recycling. At this time, we don't have many books in our school library to address these issues and we lack a librarian and the funds to order green-themed literature appropriate for elementary learners.

I would like to order books on four green themes: reducing/reusing/recycling, gardening, soil and composting, and climate change. Having books on these themes will help students learn more about the issues that face our school, community, state, country, and planet. Books on gardening and composting will help students better understand what they are doing and why as they care for our school gardens. The books will further develop the ideas they are learning about reducing waste, reusing, and recycling and help them expand their knowledge to other areas of their community. In general, literature will provide students with another access point to learn science content as well as through hands-on experience. I have selected a variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction, at different levels to support the development of all students in our school from kindergarten to fifth grade. The variety of books will provide different access points for students to connect to and make sense of the content at different points in their school experience. Reading high-interest books such as these will improve students' reading comprehension as well as help them develop a life-long love of reading and learning.

Your help will make it possible for my students to have books on green issues available for them to read at school. This is particularly important to our student population because they may not have access to books outside of school. Reading books will help my students learn more about the world they live in and encourage them to think globally as they reduce, reuse, and recycle at school, and plant and compost in their own backyards.
