There's no such thing as a free lunch. My ninth grade students are starting to realize that what they eat at meals affects their performance throughout the day, and they've decided to take a closer look at the link between food and performance.

My students are excited about sharing their knowledge with our high-need community. Their first challenge: finding ways to share their knowledge with high school students in our building to help motivate others to make well-informed food choices. The are also excited about creating materials that can be used in our local middle schools for the same purpose. Finally, the students would like to explore growing some of our own food that could be used in our cafeteria.

In order to complete our project, we need 35 copies of "Fast Food Nation." By working in literature circles with the book, students will help hone the expository reading skills they will need to be successful in college. Furthermore, small group activities help students develop effective collaboration skills, a key component of higher education and the workplace.
