Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

ESOL classroom library in a trailer - over 1,000 books and GROWING! I teach two literature classes and three composition ESOL classes. The Book Challenge has provided students with the opportunity to borrow books from my classroom library. I have been collecting all types of books for my students: low level readers, young adult, fiction and non-fiction. My goal for this project is to increase reading outside of school. This will speed up the English language learning process!

We have received over 1,000 books from donations and grants. Students have come after school to help organize and set up the books. They have taken pride in their library!

In order to make this a workable classroom library we need to keep track of the books. We do not have the supplies to keep track of books. That is why we need labels, library cards, and library card pockets. This book challenge can impact approximately 80 students! Students can borrow books to read at home! As of now, we have over 30 students borrowing books from the library! The number can only grow with your help!

The Book Challenge will encourage students to… -Summarize the book -Evaluate the book (book survey) -Describe their favorite part in the book Assessment: When students hand back the book, they will also complete the “Book Challenge – Book Survey”. Students will also be required to talk about the book with the class. - Show the book - Summarize the story (in a few lines) - Give their opinion about the book - Say if they would recommend the book to a friend.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
