This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Pio, pio, pio," is the sound that baby chicks make when they're hungry or cold. It's also part of the lyrics to a popular Spanish song for children. Hola! I teach an amazing group of first graders learning English as a Second Language in a Bilingual classroom setting. My students are native Spanish speakers and are beginning to acquire English both socially and academically. Our school is a Title I school with all children receiving free lunch and breakfast. It is located in a high-need community with very few resources. Recently, the school district announced a "miscalculation" in funds and budget cuts are expected to worsen.

It is extremely difficult to keep a language and culture alive when resources are dwindling and access to traditional songs and poetry is limited. However, I am a firm believer in empowering a child and making them proud of who they are. Furthermore, I want to keep the traditions alive by passing down the same songs which were once sung to me as a child.

My students need more traditional nursery rhymes, songs, and poetry to continue enriching their lives and give them a sense of belonging. These are the building blocks for defining oneself and learning about one's culture. At the same time, students are developing oral-language skills and phonetic awareness through music and words.

Your donation will ensure that my students feel valued. It will also provide them with language and literacy skills that are crucial in the early years. Most importantly, perhaps, is the fact that you will ensure that a child's cultural heritage remains alive and honored.
