Backpacks For Learning

My students need 10 take-home backpacks to carry home their "hands-on homework materials".

Mrs. Thomas Allen Jay Elementary School
High Point, NC Grades PreK-2

One word best sums up my students- enthusiastic! My combination Kindergarten and 1st grade class loves school, loves to read, loves to explore their world and "discover" how things work or how animals grow and move; quite simply they love to learn! My students attend an urban, high-need school where most of our families qualify for free and reduced lunch. We have a large population of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students who come to us from all over the world. In our classroom, however, we are learning not to let these types of challenges slow us down. We are each finding joy in every day and in the adventure of learning!

Last year I was able to receive funding and purchase many wonderful learning materials to create homework bags. The children and families loved the bags; I received a lot of positive feedback from my students' families. To assemble the bags I purchased shopping bags from various local stores; however, these bags are not working as well as I would like. Some are flimsy and have to be replaced often; others are too large to be carried or too small to hold all the materials. I need something kid-sized and sturdy that closes and can help protect the materials inside.

The bags I would like to purchase through this proposal are sturdy plastic backpacks that are kid-sized and have zipper closures. These are perfect for our homework backpacks! They will be the right size and have a closing that will keep materials together and safe on the route to and from school. They will also protect materials from rain and pets at home. One other nice advantage of these bags is that they are transparent which will allow me to quickly see the contents, do inventory and keep track of each bag more efficiently.

Your help in purchasing these backpacks will ensure the continued durability and use of a large lending library of learning materials. These homework bags are a successful method we are using that accomplishes many goals: continuing learning at home, involving families in their children's education, and keeping learning a fun-filled activity. You will help make this a success through your donation. Thank you so much!
