Bill Nye & I Teach Science in the Chi! (Chicago, that is!)

My students need another medium to help them learn science. The Bill Nye DVD Collection can serve this purpose.

Our school is located in a very low-income, high poverty urban area in Illinois. The location of our charter school allows the students from this neighborhood to achieve greatness in an area where a solid education is their chance succeed. A main focus of my science curriculum is constantly relating what we are learning to the student's everyday life. I try to prove each and every day that science is in everything that we do.

Growing up, I came home from school to watch "Bill Nye the Science Guy" on PBS. It was my first year of teaching when I made a reference to Bill Nye only to realize my students had no idea who I was talking about. I was able to find some Bill Nye episodes on youtube.com and showed them to my students. They LOVED them. Trying to secure an LCD projector at my school (there are only 2), hooking up speakers, and switching between segments online can waste a lot of instructional time. Additionally, my school's science program is still in the development phase. With limited resources and space, it is difficult to perform certain demonstrations and experiments. Students can see demonstrations and experiments with Bill Nye that they otherwise would not be exposed to. Having the DVD collection would make Bill Nye much more accessible for another generation to appreciate.

One of Bill Nye's strengths is breaking down science so it is easy to understand. When teaching middle school students, this is imperative to create a solid science foundation. Supplementing my instruction with Bill Nye would be a powerful resource to help my students understand science. The DVD collection will also help my daily classroom goal of showing how science is used in everyday life.

Your help will make it possible for all types of learners in my classroom, especially visual, to have another outlet to learn science.
