Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Give students a chance to use skills learned in track and field to be successful later in life. I coach in an area where funds are not readily available to pay for after school activities.

As a coach, I have a chance to teach life skills to middle school girls through track and field, skills such as hard work, discipline, accountability, etc. Track and field is an opportunity for middle school girls to transfer what they have learned in the classroom on to the athletic field. Competition breeds success--whether they win or lose. I have over 100 girls interested in participating in track and field this season. I have the opportunity to reach many kids in two months, kids who may not be successful on the track but will learn valuable skills and traits associated with participating in sports.

In order to reach this many kids, I am going to need more supplies than ever this season. These supplies include track spikes, 6lb and 8lb indoor shot puts, instant cold packs, a power chute, and a shot and discus carrier. Students who attend this school don't necessarily have the funds to help pay for supplies for after school activities. I do not want to turn away students due to financial restrictions. I have already secured sponsors for our team, so girls and their families will not have to sacrifice money that could be used elsewhere. Track and field is the one sport where self confidence is built. When a girl is on the backstretch and she is running by herself, she learns a lot about herself in that moment. She will either quit or keep going. I am trying to teach these girls whatever obstacle you encounter, keep going and don't give up. Track and field can be a metaphor for life.

Your assistance will ensure that I do not have to turn away any student due to financial restraints. It will also assist me in being able to coach and having the resources necessary to allow the girls to be successful.
