Indoor Plant Growing Station

My students need an indoor lighted growing station to be able to conduct biological and environmental science experiments on plants inside our classroom.

I teach biology and environmental science to high school students in a socio-economically disadvantaged area of Georgia. Most of the families in our community are poor and most of my students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Because our school system is small and economically disadvantaged, I do not have a lot science equipment to work with and must either make do with home made materials or spend my own money on materials.

Our school system has limited funds and we can only afford to purchase perishable items from year to year. While I consider it essential to my students learning and understanding of scientific principles, an indoor plant growing station is considered a luxury by my school system. My students are bright and eager to learn and deserve the same opportunities that other students in the state receive. Most of my students will attend some type of two or four year college after graduation and I would like to expose them to as many scientific principles and experiences as possible. Most high schools and colleges have these indoor plant growing stations with which to conduct experiments.

The indoor plant growing station will allow students to conduct scientific investigations in all the courses we teach at our school. Biology, Environmental Science, Physical Science, Chemistry and Advanced Placement Environmental Science students will all benefit from this piece of equipment. I do several classroom investigations with plants, but we have to use paper cups and have no means of controlling light and moisture so many of the experiments are not scientifically sound. With this apparatus, students can control the amount of light and moisture the plants receive while investigating factors such as plant overcrowding, type of soil, acid rain, salinization and the effects of pollution on plant growth. Also, there are four science teachers at our school and, because this indoor station is mobile, they will all be able to use it during the school year.

With your support you will make it possible for almost 400 students per year to conduct scientifically sound investigations in all the science courses we teach at some point during their high school careers. You will also give four science teachers a piece of equipment that they can use with their students for years to come.
