Operatic Experience: Let's Go To The Met!

My drama students need funding to attend a performance of "Aida" at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.

I work at a special education school, servicing emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds; over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance. The school’s ethnicity is as follows: 60% Hispanic, 30% African American, 8% Caucasian, and 2% Asian. These factors come together and place our children at a huge disadvantage, but we are committed to providing them with a rigorous academic and therapeutic program. I teach drama class to these special needs students, and make every effort to expose them to as much theater and opera as possible. I would love take them to a performance of "Aida" at the Metropolitan Opera, which is where I first fell in love with the dramatic arts. "Aida" is a classic Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi, and it tells of the love story between the warrior Radames and an Ethiopian slave, Aida (secretly an Ethiopian princess). The story reaches a dramatic end, with both Radames and Aida being buried alive. For a typical school trip, parents would be asked to provide funds for their children. However, most of my students live in poverty, and their families are unable to reach into their own pockets. We strive to provide our students with as many experiences as possible, regardless of their financial situations. Some of my students have expressed interest in studying visual and performance art in college, and I want them to become exposed to as many experiences that support their dreams. Thank you for considering my special education students. This would be an amazing operatic experience!
