Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are in a 4th grade bilingual special education classroom in a high-need urban school. The students come from extremely low income families; their parents speak almost no English and had minimal education in their home countries.

Because of my students' language and learning disabilities, they can't read the 4th grade science textbooks and other age-appropriate resource material on science and the environment. But they love science, love hands-on experiences, and learn very well through visual means. Unfortunately, my school doesn't have smart boards or sufficient computers, so we can't go online to access the materials that would be appropriate and motivating for my students. We're planning to begin a unit on the environment this Spring, and my students want to create a recycling program for the school, but we haven't been able to get written materials that can start us off.

If we could get a multimedia projector, I would use my own laptop to give my students access to differentiated, stimulating material online. I believe I've found the least expensive projector available, and I've also identified fabulous websites to kick off the project, from National Geographic and the BBC to the National Science Teachers Association. We will also be able to use the projector to make presentations to the rest of the school, convincing them of the need for a school-wide recycling program.

With your help, we can raise the Environmental Intelligence Quotient of my students and the whole school! My students will be able to complete their environmental studies unit, become more adept with technology and software, and make compelling presentations to initiate a school-wide recycling program. They will also gain access to other fabulous resources on the internet and on DVDs, not only on the environment and science, but in social studies, math and literacy as well.
