The Shape of Things

My students need body sox for dance and exploratory play.

Ms. EVANS Integrated Arts Academy
Burlington, VT Grades PreK-2

What can dancing in a sack have to do with learning shapes? The experience can develop learning experiences and memories that last forever! I teach English as a second language in a high poverty school in Vermont. The school is in its first year of a transformation into an arts magnet school. More than 80 percent of our students qualify for free- and reduced-lunch, and almost 40 percent are English language learners.

One of the kindergarten classes I work with came to us lacking even basic vocabulary, including colors and shapes. We have been working diligently through math, movement, art and literature to change this. Most of our children have learned the names of their shapes. The kindergarten teacher, gym teacher and I want to collaborate on one more project that will support this work and solidify students' knowledge and at the same time will help with children’s gross motor skills, concentration and physical awareness.

We would like to teach these kindergrtners through kinesthetic exercises to make shapes with their bodies. Children will use Body Sox to explore their own space and create dance choreography to show their understanding of shapes. This dance will then be performed for the rest of the student body and parents. Body Sox are therapeutic tools that help children become more aware of their bodies in space. They are calming and develop balance and body awareness. We teachers believe that creating dance will develop gross motor skills, a greater sense of community and self-esteem in the class. The motor memory will provide yet another scaffold for children to learn the vocabulary of shapes and of dance. We also foresee using them in producing life-sized puppetry and using them across grade levels in years to come. The size we are requesting will accommodate children in kindergarten through second grade.

Helping to purchase these Body Sox will allow three teachers to collaborate and expand the worlds of children who come to us with limited experience. It seems strange that by getting inside a stretchy sock that children can actually expand their horizons, but that is exactly what we hope to do. We want to bring our children the joy of dance, of creating, of control and balance. And these Body Sox will do exactly that. Thank you for your support!
