I need a hook, or a rug, or a magic carpet, to invite students back into exploring literature while providing an exciting journey through literature. As my school is in a rural setting, books about nature are particularly engaging to students.

I am trying to connect my high school readers by reaching back to elementary basics. Many of my students continue to face difficult economic times and pressure at home. The invitation to study literature in an informal setting is a return to the comfort of easy reading at a younger age. Jack London and Jon Krakauer both engage the reader in the exploration of the outdoors; specifically, the universal themes of man versus himself and man versus nature. This format provides a comfortable escape from the realities of life in a memorable setting.

The use of a rug may seem a basic need to some, but for my classroom it serves as an invitation to return to the comforts of youth while developing as an engaged high school reader. I know how excited my students are to use this format because they sit on a cold floor as an apparent trade-off for listening carefully and exploring the journey of a good story. This opportunity would allow me to invite more literature into the classroom and connect students to my love of learning. Call of the Wild would be an excellent compliment to Into the Wild and, as a short text, would invite the reader to experience the journey of one text while re-experiencing the memory of another.

The gift of a magic carpet will continue to give and re-invent itself through diverse literary opportunities. The addition of Call of the Wild will help me to build a literary bridge to reach my students and connected to their lives in a relevant manner.
