I teach a kindergarten special education class for students with developmental disabilities. In addition to having delayed language, many of my students are also English language learners (i.e. their families speak another language at home). Some of my students are currently nonverbal, while other have one or two word utterances.

I was recently completing an assessment on my students which asked how many different characters they can act like. I realized that although we have toys in the classroom (Legos, Play-Doh, puzzles, etc.), the option for dramatic play is limited. Many children would just use their imagination, but my students need real objects to prompt their creativity.

I would like to be able to provide them with more dramatic play activities to encourage them to use language to communicate with their peers and instructors. I have selected animal puppets, toy cars, a pretend phone, a kitchen set and a doctor set to create scenarios where students can act different parts and grow their language abilities.
