I am the Media Specialist (School Librarian) at an urban elementary school. The school has about 650 students ages 4-11.

Learning should be fun! Students need the opportunity to learn history and other subjects in creative ways. When studying events like the great depression students need to be able to make connections rather than read boring history books.

In the book "Bud, Not Buddy" an orphaned African American living in Flint, Michigan, during the Great Depression goes on a quest to find his father. The only clue his mother left him was several flyers about a band in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He gets a ride to Grand Rapids, and finds Herman E. Calloway, the man that he believes is his father. Throughout Bud's journey he describes events of the time. This book is a fantastic historical fiction that would be instrumental in helping students understand the Great Depression.

You will make it possible for my students to close their history books and travel back in time with the vivid narration of Christopher Paul Curtis (author of Bud, Not Buddy). With this book they will gain a better understanding of the Great Depression and enhance their love for reading.
