My classroom encompasses twenty-four eager fifth grade students. The Iowa district that we reside in is facing dramatic budget cuts this year, and in the following year. The budget woes mean a limited amount of money for teaching resources that engage and empower students for the future. Not only does the budget affect resources, but it also means an increase in class sizes.

Students within our district are expected to acquire and use technology skills for the 21st century. I have found it challenging to teach students the technology skills necessary with one running student computer in our classroom! Having more computers within the classroom would open many doors for my students. With the aid of more computers I would be able to have reading centers in which students could type their weekly writing reports, create PowerPoint presentations, conduct research from websites, and complete online projects I have created for them. The opportunities are truly endless.

If provided with the essential tools, students are willing and enthusiastic about incorporating computer skills into their daily learning. I have witnessed their excitement as they practically race to the computer when they have completed an assignment early. I feel it is only fair to give students better access to the technology driven world we live and grow in.

The opportunities and technologies we give our students should not be sacrificed due to lack of state funding!
