These students are in Physical Education. This alternative school is where they go after being suspended out of their "home" school due to some altercation they participated in. Since these young people are not allowed to walk around they must be contained in a central area and be monitored. The items that are being ordered will keep them focused and active when the weather is bad. Only half of the class wants to play basketball and the other half is sitting on the stage. They all need to participate in some activity which will help them engage in mentally and build on their social skills to function in society later, or possibly go to college. Simple things such as chess or checkers get them to analyze the situation and think it through. These students often do not think out their situations which is why they are in this school. Specific games can allow them to analyze and react in a more appropriate manner.

This school has a college partnership but it does not have any partners donating funds or items that the students can use to be motivated. A couple of parents have donated a game or two to the school (In School Suspension room) but the Health and PE department does not have any mental games; students can play basketball indoors or football outdoors. Recently a parent donated a set of weights and a stationary bike, which a few students use. They do not have a lot of activities which motivates all students to participate in.

These items such as 2 coolers, 2 boxes of cups, 2 checkers board games, 2 chess games or even two dodge balls would challenge boys and girls mentally and physically. We have two PE teachers and these items would help the teachers bring some variety to their classroom (other than indoor basketball and outdoor football). This course has more students signing up for it than any other course, but does not have enough resources to help the classroom become a positive motivator as it could.

All students need to be challenged in multiple ways. When a child grows up they not only want to take part in some type of physical activity they need to be mentally challenged as well. Chess, checkers and even a simple game of dodge ball helps all students get involved in mental challenges which make the student analyze their opponent’s next move. These basic skills which most of us take for granted are really considered resourceful life skills in jobs, the military, or even going to college. It prepares them to think what they need to do next which has a positive effect on the student. This school needs to help these students to think and react in a positive manner, because they got here due to a negative behavior.
