My kindergarten and grade one primary students need 10 stuffed dogs to relax them in the computer lab so they can feel comfortable enough to login into their subscription web sites to learn their phonics.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello. My public school is primarily Hispanic with many of my K-5 elementary students unable to read, speak, or write English at their grade level. In addition, this area is in an urban, high poverty area. Since my previous school closed last June, I taught summer school here and quickly immersed myself into the culture of this school. Students are eager to learn and have a culture that values being respectful to other students and adults. As a result, students are quick learners and high achievers.

The situation is that I have kindergarten and first graders come to the computer lab and they are still uncomfortable about being in school and many do not have English as a primary language which adds yet another level of anxiety. Once I address their emotional needs, students are much more eager to learn their phonics lessons which are differentiated and individualized to their specific needs.

The solution to is relax my primary students with large stuffed animals. I currently have a few animals and I am always amazed how the stuffed animal sitting by a young student will calm a student so they are ready to engage in learning. I am asking for a yellow lab, a black lab, a dalmatian, a golden retriever, an English bulldog, a Shetland sheepdog, a rottweiler, a basset hound, a pug, and a husky. These animals will add another dimension to my computer lab. I am a teacher first and the technology is only an enabler to engage the student in learning. First and foremost, I want to address the well being of every student and create an environment that is inviting and appealing to especially the younger students. Can you image logging into a web site with a user name and password (the password is a number, a shape, and an animal picture) to learn phonics when you were in kindergarten?

Without your help this resource will not be available to my students. There is simply no budget for stuffed dogs. DonorsChoose donors are the best in the world.
