My students need an 8th grade field trip to remember, in this case admission and transportation for 97 people to Physics Day at Six Flags Great America!
I am an inclusion special education teacher for 8th graders at a dynamic, successful neighborhood school with a diverse and primarily low-income population.
How do we develop in our students a passion for and deep understanding of science? While we work hard to provide hands-on activities and a rigorous curriculum focused on physical science for our 8th graders, our students deserve the chance to really see physics in motion...in the real world. What could be better than a trip to an amusement park to help accomplish this!?
We need funds to pay for the transportation and admission fees for Physics Day at Six Flags Great America. Without financial support, many of our students could not afford to pay for the trip, especially given the graduation fees they must pay. We want to make this trip, which is so rich with math and science concepts and applications, possible for all our kids.
I had the opportunity to attend Physics Day myself as a student over 15 years ago. I still hold fond and vivid memories of the trip, and credit it for my decision to enroll in AP Physics later in high school. It truly helped make the lessons we had been learning in school come to life, and opened my eyes to how fun learning and science could be.
Now, as a teacher, I want my students to have that same epiphany. All we need is the financial means to make it a reality. Your help will ensure that our students get the same access to meaningful, exciting, and educational field trips outside of school that all children, regardless of financial resources, deserve.
