High risk students in a high need community deserve the best education. My tenth grade physical science students love to learn when it is fun; and class is most fun to them when it is interactive and led by them, not the teacher. They feel as if they are discovering new information when they come to my class. There are short lectures and information packed activities, that allow them to be led to the knowledge rather than told. This school is very unique, in that it services a very diverse student population. We have some that have been unsuccessful at other local high schools, bright students who are looking to finish high school early, drop-outs who have returned, and also regular four year attendees.

My biggest obstacle is reaching all the students in an effective way. I have come to see that the more interactive my class is, the more effective my teaching is. They can do the review questions in their textbook, or we can play jeopardy with the questions being displayed via projector. The concept is the same, to review, but the method makes all the difference in how effective the review is for the students.

One step in making my classroom instruction more effective is to project a large image, be that pictures, PowerPoint presentations, or videos, throughout the classroom via a multimedia projector. This will allow my students to connect the concepts we are studying with the images they observe.

Your generosity will help to level the playing field for these students who often do not find themselves at liberty to use the latest in technologies and resources. They will be able to better see visually, which is the way that many of them learn, the concepts that we are studying. These kids deserve the best, and I would like to do everything within my power to provide it to them.
