Budget cuts and spending freezes. Bah humbug! I teach a linguistically and multicultural diverse group of 21 third grade students. We are located in a low- to middle-income neighborhood outside of San Francisco.

My English Learners, as well as my native English speakers, need a lot of opportunities to hear English being spoken and sung. Our challenge as teachers is to keep our students interested in the adopted curricula. One way to hook the students' interest is by offering them the opportunity to hear stories read aloud to them. What better way than to have the stories on CD or tape so that students can listen to the stories at their own leisure? My students also need to feel validated, so the purchase of multicultural/world music can show them that I care about not just how important English is, but how important and valuable knowing other languages can be.

My students will have multiple opportunities during the days and weeks that lead up to those high-stakes, end-of-the-year tests to listen, listen, and listen to the stories that we have been reading in our adopted textbooks. They can also enjoy multicultural music and gain an appreciation for other cultures.
