School as we knew it growing up is a distant memory in my classroom. Gone are the days of information being presented by the teacher and here are the days of students gathering, understanding, and sharing the information themselves. I teach the AIG (Academically/Intellectually Gifted) children at my school in North Carolina. Instead of delivering lessons in a traditional manner, I guide my upper elementary students in learning by providing them with support and a framework. Then they explore many resources online and in books. After they have an understanding of the material they create a digital product and share what they have learned with others in their classes.

Students have a great interest in multimedia products, and I would say that they have a need to learn how to use these programs now so that they will be able to keep pace with technology as it evolves. They need to be able to grow with the technology as it changes and becomes increasingly complex. My students have already been able to create PowerPoint presentations, Publisher products and published their writing using a word processing program. I would like to take their work up another level by providing them with the tools they need to create short movies and pod casts, but we lack the materials we need to make this happen. We are a new school and we opened at a time when education cut backs have severely cut our budget. The school currently has a few digital cameras that all classes are trying to share. This creates a struggle for the gifted students in my classroom who have to plan their projects and work based on whether or not they have access to the camera that week. Currently there are no microphones in the school which limits the audio that they can add to their presentations.

Having a camera and microphone at the disposal of the students who work in my classroom would open up many possibilities. They would be able to create even more sophisticated products to share their learning, utilize online programs that would be free to use if we only had the tools, and create wikis to communicate with the world. I also think it is very important that students learn to use computers as a tool for learning, not as the toy that it has often been. My students have already learned to use many programs and then returned to their homerooms ready and able to teach their peers how to use the technology we currently have in our school. I have had the pleasure of seeing them take control of their own learning and I know that having these addition technological tools will open new doors of learning not only for them, but also for their peers.

Your help will not only allow my students to create digital products for my class, but you will also be helping them become well rounded 21st century learners and leaders. In the future they will be expected to utilize all kinds of technology in their careers, and these tools will help lay the groundwork for that eventual need. Using these tools today will give them the confidence and skills they will need tomorrow.
