I work in a high needs kindergarten class in North Carolina. The kids in my class have a diverse set of needs due to their different language backgrounds and their varying levels of exposure to literature at home.

Due to the economy there have been a lot of budget cuts in education. At a time when many families are struggling to make ends meet I would like to provide a free literacy service to the parents and children that I work with.

With your help I will be able to get many materials from books to games and manipulatives to extend students knowledge of what we are doing in the classroom. With your help I will create 2 traveling book bags that are themed around the concept of sorting. Some of the things that are included in the bags are; 4 books about sorting, 2 different sorting games that students can play with siblings or parents, buttons and a button tray for children to practice sorting, stamps and a stamp pad for students to create their own sorting rule, Sort N Shapes manipulative, and 2 bags to store and transport the materials from school to home. With these materials students and parents will be able to spend time reading together and use the books as a springboard to explore sorting.

With your help my students and their families will have the opportunity to read non-fiction text that covers an essential math topic for our kindergarten kids, and to explore sorting with the accompanying manipulatives. Hopefully this will make it possible for students and parents to spend time together and provide an opportunity for parents to help their child learn more about sorting. I hope you will find this project as valuable for my students as I do and make this dream a reality.
