I teach kindergarten in a high needs school. My kids come from a variety of different cultural backgrounds and speak many different languages.

We are a school that is struggling to meet state testing requirements and we are looking for more creative ways to get parents involved at an early age. As Claudia Wallis writes in "How to Make a Better Student, "The best SAT preparation course in the world is to read to your children in bed when they are little. Eventually, if it's a wonderful experience for them, they'll start to read themselves." (Time, Oct. 19,'98).

Unfortunately many of the students in my class do not have a number of high quality books at home, and are not being read to consistently, if at all. We need the book Grandfather Tang' Story, a bucket of Tangrams, a set of Tangram templates, Tangoes Jr. game, a backpack to keep all of the materials together and to transport back and forth from school and home, and a book with different tangram puzzles. With these resources I will create a literacy and math book bag which will make it possible for my students and their parents to spend time reading together and working on visual spatial relationships, which is a key math skill in kindergarten.

With your help we will be able to bring the joy back to reading and more importantly create a time for families to spend together that involves their child's education. Maybe we can create an environment in these homes that promotes reading and spending time together with books instead of time sitting around the T.V. My vision is of a world where reading is fun and enjoyable and kids bond with their families over it. Your donation will help that dream become a reality.
