I teach Middle School students in the country's third largest school district. This urban and neighborhood school serves students who are living below the federal poverty level (97% of the student body). My classroom is a full inclusion classroom which means I have regular education students as well as students with a range of mild to severe special needs. I also have large class sizes of upwards of 35 students in each of my reading and writing classes.

As an English Language Arts teacher, I work with students on the development of their written communication. Each month we explore one form or genre of writing. For instance, this year we have studied and published personal narratives, realistic fiction short stories and personal essays. My students are required to take state mandadated assessments in the area of writing. Their assessment scores determine their high school choice (options) and it is imperative that I teach and they learn not only how to write (format and function) but they learn how to write literary essays or extended responses. One challenge is my ability to display student writing or the reading text as part of the process of unpacking the stages of writing and the revision and edit process.

An elmo is a device that allows me to place any print under the camera for large viewing on the projector screen. This is not able to be done with antiquated overhead projector I currently have. I may run copies of student writing for students to "see" but this is wasteful and takes time and planning. For me to just be able to take a student's writing and place it on the Elmo to share with students, to show the revision and edit process would truly be a godsend.

I know that this is an expensive device and thus the reason I am asking for donations. If I receive this tool for writing (and reading) it will be shared with all of my writing and reading classes and will empower my ability to make shared reads and writing available to all learners in my classroom. It also allows me to zoom onto pieces of text that makes it suitable for my students with special needs who sometimes require the part before the whole.
