Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a bilingual 5th grade class in a high-poverty area. My students are very motivated to learn, but don't have access to the resources they need. They are working very hard to learn English while learning to be completely bilingual. I want to be able to expand their learning opportunities and make their learning experiences authentic for them. I also want them to be exposed to technology and learn how to use it to benefit them.

We've been doing something called Reader's Theater in which the students practice reading with fluency in order to perform the play for the rest of the class. We've paired up with a fourth grade class and they help each other out and read together. This makes reading so much more fun for them and gives them a purpose for reading. Doing Reader's Theater improves their motivation for comprehension, and also makes them think about what they're reading in order to think about how the character would say their lines. It has been a fantastic project and has really helped the students improve their reading skills.

The only thing that would make this project even better is for my students to be able to see themselves perform. This would help them self-reflect and find ways to improve their reading fluency. This is why I would love to take videos of their performances and burn then onto DVDs for them to watch and to keep as a memory of their performances.

Your donation will give my students access to something that is usually only conceived of in high-income schools, but is really something that all students deserve. Our society is moving forward extremely quickly technologically and all students should be able to benefit. This will be a small way for you to help level the playing field for students from low-income backgrounds.
