The Bluest Eye Books for 10th Grade Students

My students need 64 copies of "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison, plus a teacher's guide.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I feel that I have been a teacher for most of my life, even though I have only been in the classroom for ten years. I have always had something to teach someone else, whether it's a friend or a child. Teaching has been a wonderful experience for me. I decided to work in the inner city from the beginning, where I could make the most difference. Although I face many challenges with my students, it is extremely rewarding! I teach tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade English in one of the toughest neighborhoods in California. My school is in a high-need community where most of the students live at or below the poverty level. They face many obstacles; gangs, violence, foster homes, homelessness, etc. Despite all of this, they are eager to learn when given the opportunity!

My school district provides a very limited amount of novels for teachers to use in the classroom. Over the years, some of these novels have either been lost or damaged. There are only 30 novels left of The Bluest Eye to share among 400 tenth grade students at my school.

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison is a novel that I use to teach the negative effects of racism and discrimination. This is a valuable lesson for my students because they are minorities who have faced these obstacles in life. It is important that they realize the negative effects of racism and discrimination and how to overcome these issues with tolerance. The book is also about finding one's identity. This is important for student's who often feel overlooked and valueless. At the end of this unit which includes many other valuable lessons, my students and I visit The Museum of Tolerance to further explore these important topics.

I believe in having high expectations for my students, so that they may reach their fullest potential. They understand that education is the way out of their situation and work hard to achieve their goal of gaining a college education. Your help will ensure that they are one step closer to having the reading and writing tools they will need to be successful in college!
