I teach high school science in a small, poor, rural county in North Carolina. We have very little money available and it goes for maintenance - not science supplies.

My students are interested in the science behind global warming and climate-change research. They want to do some experiments involving the cooling and heating of air masses, soils and water. But we do not have any way to chill or heat samples reliably. We do not have a refrigerator, a functional heating unit or a class set of calculators; and we only have three old thermometers. How can we prepare students for college or even, minimally, give them an understanding of all the climate-change arguments if they have no personal experience of the science involved?

We need a small refrigerator, a microwave oven, a class set of thermometers and a small class set of calculators so that we can do experiments. With this equipment, my students can experiment on heat loss in dry or humid air, water and heat differences in varying soil types, and heat transfer between air and water or land and air. These experiments, and others, will help prepare them for college as well as giving them a basic understanding of how weather and climate factors interact.

You can help these kids learn about something that affects all of us and will certainly be a major issue in their lives. You can help get them ready for college with useful and practical lab experiences and help them understand the basic dynamics of our climate. We can't do these experiments without the basic equipment- and we can't afford it. With your help we can make this happen for these kids.
