We Give a Hoot - Do You?

My students need 30 copies of "Hoot", an environmental fiction book by Carl Hiaasen.

Do you remember reading meaningful books about the environment and social justice in 6th grade math and science class? I teach 6th grade math and science in a low-income, urban charter school in California and I am determined to give my students opportunities to read great books that will captivate their interests!

Our school is focused on giving students authentic experiences with reading, writing and problem solving across disciplines with a social justice focus, though we could certainly use some additional resources to achieve this task. My students are avid readers and very interested in environmental issues, so I would like to engage them in reading Hoot!

Hoot is a creative ecological mystery, in which middle school students set out to save an endangered species of owls in their community. This book has received many awards, including the Newberry Honor, and is right at the reading level of my students! I would like to have my students read this book as a class, so that we can discuss issues that arise together and practice reading strategies as well as scientific strategies. This book fits in very well with our standards-based science curriculum, which is related to ecology and natural resources. I am also hoping that this book may lead my students to think of what issues they can become involved with in their own community, perhaps sparking interest in a class project that we can take on together to give back to our community.

I really hope that you will consider giving a hoot right alongside us by giving us a chance to read Hoot in our classroom. Thank you so much for considering our request and I hope to be able to update you on where this experience takes us!
