We will become experts on the wildly interesting animals from Down Under. From the koala to the spiny anteater to the platypus - no place has animals like Australia! The second- and third-grade students in this multi-age class will be writing reports, making costumes, and ultimately turning the room into the different areas of Australia from the Outback to the rainforest.

We've studied other subjects before, but these kids are ready for a completely new challenge. However, because we haven't studied Australia before, we have no books on the subject. They each need to learn how to research, take notes on, and write a paper about one Australian animal.

With these books, my students will be able to choose an animal, become an expert on it, then share their expertise with the class and all of our visitors. They will learn to read non-fiction text, take notes, then plan and write an expert report. Those skills will allow them to learn about any subject that interests them in the future!

You will make it possible for these students to expand their reading and writing skills - with a topic that truly grabs them.
