"I teach Honors and Advanced Placement Chemistry at a high needs urban school in Illinois. In my experience, my students need assistance learning about ideas that they cannot see and dynamic ideas that require manipulation.

Recently, my classroom received an interactive whiteboard. My students and I agree that it is the coolest learning tool that we have in our classroom. I use it almost every day to provide a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. Not only does it make learning fun and interactive, but students learn by manipulating ideas dynamically. In addition, they learn about concepts that they cannot see in the microscopic and atomic world.

Using this technology, I have been able to expose my students to the rigor of the competitive college and career world that awaits them. Many of them have shown a great deal of success. This year, I envision that more than 75% of my AP Chemistry students will pass the AP exam (up from 45% last year) and earn college credit.

Though this tool has revolutionized the way that I teach, a significant problem has arisen. Approximately 20% of the seating area of my classroom is usurped by the positioning of the LCD projector on a cart, causing my students to be even more cramped than before.

In order to regain that space, my students would benefit from mounting a short-throw projector in the area above the board using a wall mount. Students would be more comfortable and more of my students would be able to interact with the board, increasing performance of students in preparation for success in my class and in higher learning. hide»

Reply to the classroom

Dear John and Terry, Amy, Elliot and Kathleen and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,

Thank you so much for your donation of the arm which suspends the projector from my wall for the interactive whiteboard. Before this arm was present, almost one fifth of my classroom seating area was usurped by the old projector and stand. Because of your donation, students are not sitting on top of each other, literally or figuratively.

When students have room, they can relax and focus on learning. For the first few months of this school year, that was definitely a struggle.

This year, I project approximately 80% of my AP Chemistry class to pass the exam! In my Honors Chemistry classes, 97% of students have mastered stoichiometry and about 75% have mastered limiting reagents thus far. These are astounding numbers, the best of my career. I have you to thank for my students' achievements.

Every day in my classroom, we prove that students from underserved communities can be strong learners, possibly stronger than their more affluent counterparts. You help me prove to them that they are powerful.

Again, I thank you very much for your donation and ask that you consider giving to me or another teacher via Donorschoose.

With gratitude,
Dr. A.

Dear John and Terry, Amy, Elliot and Kathleen and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,

Thank you very much for your generous donation of a projector arm mount. Because of you, my students will have more space to move about my room, increasing their comfort but also enabling them to be better students by enhancing their engagement in lessons.

Since receiving an interactive whiteboard this year, teaching and learning in my class has been transformed. Unfortunately, much of the board space has been unused because the board exceeds the size that the existing projector can illuminate well.

Also, a significant shadow has been present because the projector sits on a table in front of the board. Installing a new projector (that my principal has committed to purchasing) from an angle above the board will reduce the shadow and increase the seating area.

When my students have more space to learn, they will be able to come to the interactive whiteboard more frequently and learn more.

Your donation will lead directly to greater learning by my students.

With gratitude,
Dr. A.
