Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach general music in an elementary/middle school (Pre-K through 8th grade) in a high-needs community in a large urban school district. Our school works with approximately 400 students and has a large population of Spanish-speaking students and a focus on special education, including children with autism and emotional disturbances.

My middle-school students are incredibly interested in learning to play the piano and are highly motivated by any activities involving musical instruments. Our school currently has only 6 keyboards to use for classes of 20-24 students. We have no money in the budget to buy additional materials for the music program.

We need at least 6 additional keyboards for our music classroom in order to ensure that every student in grades 5 through 8 will have regular access to a piano.

By choosing to fund our school's Keyboard for Kids project, you will impact up to 180 students every week by providing them with the ongoing opportunities to create music. For many of my middle-school students, who are unmotivated by traditional academic subjects and struggle to stay in school, music can provide a strong motivator for continued attendance, as well as increasing self-esteem and overall investment in their education.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
