Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Sure you've got the textbook, but why is this dissection still so hard? I am a 7th grade math/science teacher at a Title I school. Ninety-three percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch; seventy percent of our students are English language learners. In addition the language needs in our classroom, many students have special learning needs. Our school is dedicated to providing our students with the tools and education to prepare them for college. We work closely with the community and parents to prepare our students for college.
In middle school the volume of vocabulary in math and science skyrockets, leaving many students feeling discouraged despite their desire to succeed. My English Language Learners and students with auditory processing disorders need visual aids to allow them to really get the concept first, then lay the vocabulary on top. I struggle with providing these students access to the rigorous science laboratory experiences they need in order to fully understand our curriculum. In math, I find that many students need visual aids to truly understand the concepts beyond simply memorizing a rule or definition.
This document camera would allow me to help all of my students to access challenging math and science curriculum. Whereas, before they had to gather around and watch the whole dissection before beginning themselves or rely on a worksheet, with a document camera I could model each step as we go along. Watching each step modeled and following along makes mistakes less likely with our limited materials. During microscope observations I will be able to literally show students the difference between an air bubble and an elodea cell, instead of my scratchy drawings on the whiteboard. Finally, I can model math problems and note taking strategies, with the flexibility to use manipulatives to make the math come to life.
You will make it possible for my students to experience dramatic eye opening learning experiences. Your support provides our classroom with a teaching tool that benefits ALL students.
