My special needs students have already proven that they can create beautiful masterpieces from clay. I teach severely disabled students at an elementary school in grades 2nd-5th, but they are functioning on a kindergarten to a first grade academic level. These students range in severity of mental delays as well as physically disabilities, but they are all similar in one aspect - their potential to succeed!

The students in my class face many challenges in life. From walking to speaking, from reading to counting, these students learn at a significantly slower rate than their average peers. All subjects must be taught with a "hands-on" approach for retention. It may take YEARS to learn a skill that other students pick up in only moments. The class has started making beautiful jewelry from clay. So beautiful, in fact, that we are selling the items to raise our own funds to take the hard working students on a trip to Disney World at the end of this year. During this process, we have incorporated every aspect of their IEP's and motivated the students to learn. They now BEG to work on the project!! The students are learning to read by matching word/color cards to jewelry pieces, increasing fine motor skills with the sculpting the items from clay and then stringing of the medallions onto necklaces, counting and adding money that THEY have made, identifying dates on a calendar as they look forward to their trip, making countdown charts, job skills, teamwork and most of all feeling pride in themselves!

The class needs a slab roller (a table that has a wheel mechanism that allows the students to easily and quickly flatten lumps of clay). We are currently using a hand method that is time consuming and many of the students do hot have the strength to flatten the clay, so the teachers have to do it for them. I feel strongly that they will be not only much more productive, but will have even more ownership of the project if they were able to do the work completely by themselves. Not only is the slab roller perfect for the current project, but also for future projects such as ornaments, birdhouses, trays and tiles. The slab roller could make the class self sufficient for years to come! You are not only helping by the purchase of a piece of equipment, you are helping the students to help themselves.

With the beginning of this project, we have already sold our items to people in seven different states and one other country. Just THINK of the potential you could unleash in these special students if you could enable them to be even more productive!! Not only would you be helping our class for years to come, but we could also share the piece of equipment with the art students in our entire school as well as with our extended day students!! You have the potential to reach 900 regular education students and forever empower the precious children in my class. Together, we can give them the skills they need to be productive members of our society and to feel a great deal of self-worth.
