Tuesdays with Morrie for Mrs. Harris' Class

My students need 30 copies of "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom.

Students need exposure to characters with rich experiences--they have so much to learn from optimistic people, like Morrie, who deal with life (and death) as it comes. This is an opportunity for them to meet a real person who can teach them how to live their lives better.

Students are facing the obstacle of desensitization. They live in a culture of violent video games and movies, and music that favors poor treatment of other people. "Tuesdays with Morrie" will introduce them to a love of humanity and life that they seldom see in the media.

It's my hope that once we read this book and get through the literary elements, students will be motivated to reach out to people with a new compassion. I'd like to contact a local nursing home and invite students to volunteer with me--using Morrie's optimism and love of life as an example. I'd like to see this book open doors for students and allow them to feel good about themselves for helping others. These kids would make connections to literature that they haven't had before, while boosting their own self-esteem. What an opportunity! I already have them on board--we just need some books to get started!

By contributing to this project, you will help make it possible for my students to become more compassionate people. This is a way to instill a love of reading, humanity, and life. As this non-fiction book is rich with characterization and dialogue, they will meet curricular needs in a way that will make reading realistic and appreciated! Please help me give me students the chance to grow as readers and into loving young adults.
