It's ALIVE! Bringing Animal Biology to Life

My students will benefit from the interactive biology experience that comes from investigating live animals and habitats through labs and projects using these 4 animal habitats. They need 1 bessbug set, 1 river ecosystem, 1 lizard habitat with 6 lizards, 1 tarantula habitat with rosy haired tarantula.

Field experiences are an integral part of attaining a quality education, particularly in the sciences. In subfields like Biology and Environmental Science, learning about animal biology and behavior, adaptation and natural selection, habitats, and perhaps most importantly, conservation issues is not deep and meaningful without opportunities to investigate living specimens. Our project will do just that and allow students to design and investigate their own questions; which is the best way to prepare them for college. The educational benefits of this project far outweigh the costs, but the costs are a difficult obstacle for disadvantaged students to overcome.

At our school, over 60% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. A large percentage of these students are English Language Learners (ELL) which means their parents have immigrated to the United States (largely from Haiti) and are currently at extreme poverty levels socioeconomically. Many of these students cannot contribute even one dollar toward a lab fee. The quality of one’s education (especially in the United States of America) should not be dependent upon one’s socioeconomic status. Sadly, this is still the case in many parts of the country.

ELL students will, in particular, benefit from a living biology laboratory. Hands-on activities, laboratory experiments, and field studies are important for students to learn content through a language barrier. Their understanding of course material will go beyond simple vocabulary and science concepts to a deeper, more meaningful appreciation of a range of topics. Even more importantly, a living laboratory will do a great deal toward preparing students for college level learning. Inquiry based science using real specimens will allow students to explore scientific questions much more deeply, and will increase their desire to go to college. The high level of learning that takes place in a real laboratory is exactly the kind of learning that takes place at the college level. Students who succeed in college have had inquiry based science learning throughout their education; this project is aimed at providing such learning to disadvantaged students.

Opportunities for animal encounters and laboratory experiences are not rare in private schools or public schools in wealthy areas. The discrepancy in opportunities between such schools continues to be the case in this country, and funding is a major obstacle for low-income public schools endeavoring to provide high quality science education. Donors can do a great deal to mediate this problem at a Title 1 school with a modest monetary contribution. The contribution will have an immediate impact on at-risk youth and increase their ability and motivation to succeed.
