Lexington, SC Grades 3-5

I am a third grade teacher in a low income rural area. I have 17 lively and enthusiastic students who are facing trials everyday. They come to school to escape in a world of learning. I believe it is my responsibility and calling to provide my students with the best learning experience I can provide for them. While my passion is strong, and my determination is endless, my funds are not. This is where you can help flame the fire!

Literacy is the number one influence on a child's life. While it is the only thing they will never lose, it is also the only thing they can not live without! Many of my students have difficulties when it comes to reading and engaging in literacy tasks. In order to provide the best learning environment with the most literacy-based influences, I conduct small group meetings while other students are engaged in meaningful activities at literacy centers around the room.

So far, I have made all of my literacy centers. With this being my second year, I am fading fast! It takes me all weekend to make one literacy center. With limited parental/volunteer assistance, it is up to me. With these literacy center activities, it will save time for me to do more in-depth planning or a chance for me to power back up for a new week. These resources include word work activities, vocabulary building activities, Daily Oral Language, fluency building activities, and reading comprehension skills training. With these resources, my students will become engaged, independent learners. These resources will allow my students to see reading and literacy in a whole new light; a light that spotlights their abilities, skills, and accomplishments while making reading fun!

Earlier, I said that you can help flame the fire. Not only flame the fire of my passion to help a high-poverty area produce educated citizens, my zest to fervor children's hearts and minds, but more importantly flame the fire in the minds of my students. For this, I thank you in advance. Thank you for letting my students gain power and strength in literacy to define their minds and to define who they could become in the future.
